Reaction towards me in gaiziantep

Although there were tourist in Gaziantep, we definitely got a lot of attention.  I was with a bunch of exchange students from Germany and the Netherlands.   With me being Asian, of course we stuck out like a sore thumb.  Everywhere we went, people were saying “hello” and pointing and just surprised to see us.  Some where kind, like the lady and her daughter walking behind me looking and smiling.  So I turned around and spoke in my perfect Turkish (yeah right) “Merhaba”.  She asked some questions like where I was from, etc.  and I was able to reply in Turkish :)   She turned to the ATM and said “bye” as I continued to walk.

Some did not react as kindly.  Jonna and Chantal, two Dutch girl who went on the trip with me, told me that a guy saw me and his mouth literally dropped open.  I also saw someone double looked with a head snap forward to ensure that what they saw was real, as if Asians were a myth.  And of course, many thought I was Japanese and would refer to me as “Japon” to each other.
