METU requires their classes be taught in English with exceptions. Art classes may be taught in Turkish because it is a little casual than other disciplines. Since most students, especially the lower level, are not comfortable speaking English, classes with topic that rely heavily on class discussions may be dominantly Turkish. For example, for this reason a sociology class on the topic of sex didn’t allow foreign students who don’t know Turkish take his class.
For the most part, classes are taught with a combination of both Turkish and English. Teachers would try to lecture in English and would clarify in Turkish. Students would usually ask their questions in English. Sometimes two languages are interchanged in one sentence. It is quite fun to sit in a class when this happens because I would hear something and quickly it turns into mumbles.
